Do I have to be Ukrainian to join?
We get this question a lot and the answer is, no, you do not have to be Ukrainian to join our family. We welcome everyone from any cultural background to come dance with us. All you need is a desire to be a part of a great family, to learn to dance Ukrainian and to perform at competitions and concerts.
How many competitions do you participate in during a season?
We dedicatedly attend Cheremosh every May, this is a corner stone competition for us and conveniently located. We also normally attend at least one more, either in Calgary or Grande Prairie. However, we are hoping to expand our competitions to include a few more, and further travel. We do not have anything set in stone for any particular year, except Cheremosh.
Do you perform within the community?
Yes we do, and we love it. Within any given year, we are often asked to perform at local and surrounding schools, nursing homes, festivals and on occasion, weddings and other parties. We definitely enjoy giving back to the community that has supported us since 1983.
Is it expensive to join? Costumes costs? Monthly fees?
I will not put a definitive quote for costs here. Every year it can change, depending on the club's financial needs, this can and does include new costumes, price hikes from other venues, our hall rental and so on. I will say that we are no where near as expensive as many other dance companies. We are a smaller dance company, our goal is not to make a profit, but to enjoy and share our joy of Ukrainian dance with you and our community.
We do not make you buy costumes, but we do charge a small rental fee. You are however responsible for buying the assigned shoes for your costume and all practice clothing.
Do I have to volunteer? Fundraisers?
Yes...and, Yes. We require volunteer time within our club...things like our Malanka/Zabava, Year end, BBQ, parade, as well we have on going volunteer positions like, costume parent and board positions when they come available.
Throughout the year we do a variety of different fundraisers, from selling Ukrainian food, to going around the town to collect recyclables. We have done various other fundraisers as well, and each year can bring something different.
We also do a Casino night every couple years. This is a big money maker for our club.
All of these things help keep the costs for our club down, and allows us to pass that savings on to our dancers.
Do I(my child) have to attend every practice/competition/concert?
Yes. It's discouraged to miss practice, comps or concerts. Our dances are designed around every dancer involved. Each person plays a key role in the choreography and success of the dance. When a dancer fails to show up to practice on a regular basis, it throws their group off and causes missteps and frustration due to a poorly performed routine. When you miss a concert it causes the dance to be thrown off and look odd, other dances have to quickly over compensate for you absence. Missing a competition could cost your group a higher medal, same things as missing a concert, apply to a comp...only there is more at stake.
With this said, we do understand being sick, unavoidable circumstances and vacations. We do encourage vacations be planned accordingly as to not interfere with important practices (couple weeks leading up to an event) and to not cause you to be absent from an event. Your dance group, your dance family, is counting on you as much as you are on them.
